The Bitter Angels John Paul Halicki 9781441512130 Books

The book follows the misadventures of protagonist and Los Angeles transplant Stanley Kosinsky as he holes up in a seedy San Francisco hotel and hangs on for dear life as he helplessly watches his close friend plummet into and wallow around in the dark recesses of insanity and depravity. Probing the depths of crack-induced turmoil and delirium, parts read like a Wikipedia manual for drug use, while others render the flavors of a Hunter S. Thompson or Bukowsky vignette. Misanthropic sarcasm and tender sensitivity collide with stark no-nonsense realism as the writer’s personality lurches forth in this glimpse into 1990’s northern and southern California counterculture. It is questionable whether this first-hand account is truly “the most disastrous vacation in literary history.” Extensive research would have to be done, and I think I just might have to take that task on.

The Bitter Angels John Paul Halicki 9781441512130 Books Reviews

This tome has everything. Joy, drama, drugs, sex, agony and a state of mind. I'm no critic or expert but when I read something that has the power to make me queasy, I start paying attention. The author seems to transcend genres and dialectic trends to create a work that is impossible to put down, until you have to report for work.

The writing is at first, I admit, is (in my eyes) laconic, and leaves one to wonder where the bloody story is. But after I read it the second time I got it. It's so deep, it's shallow. (sorry)

Check this book out and experience EMOTION.
a True Brown Knuckler...Zombie Page Turner...its a wonder Halicki has lived this long and suffered this much...you think you got troubles ? this is the best self-help book to come out in five-thousand years...a timeless martyr unsung until now...and he digs his own grave with this one...slammed down into your soul like a gallon of vodka spiked with drano...broken wheeled rambling with bad breath...stinks up the stage with brilliant prose overlapping like scales on a drowning fish...blood drenched stools fill the commode with this comic opera...you cannot put it down, flush it down, nor figure it out...you must move yourself over to allow for 'Bitter Angels' to live again...and again...in your nightmares...Beware this Book ! (you'll Love it; I did...and survived...)
The Bitter Angels is an honest, often humorous and sometimes disturbing, look into a world most of us never get to see.
The story unfolds in a fleabag hotel in San Francisco but, it could be Anycity, USA. The occupants are an interesting collection of people, some hilarious, some repulsive and some are both.
The first person narration allows the author to provide interesting background information as well as blistering social commentary. It also gives him the opportunity to truely explore, on an emotional level, what the protagonist is feeling, every step of the way.
This story is also an accurate portrayal of the effect that crack cocaine had when it entered the lexicon of recreational drugs. And does so without being didactic.
I enjoyed reading The Bitter Angels and look forward to Mr. Halicki's next book.
